Sing songs of gladness now and evermore to freedom's song

Open up our heart's desire with love that's everlasting

Let this magic bring together all who dwell upon the Earth

All mankind shall be together and peace shall reign upon the Earth

Joyful, as the stars of heaven
We approach the throne of joy,
Singing, shining, homeward pining,
Happiness now unalloyed.

Now together bound as brothers,
Sisters, ^ though from many lands, ^
We have found our home as mothers,
Fathers, ^ when we join our hands

2.
Let us sing the song of gladness,
Song of joy and song of love,
Now is not a time for sadness,
Hear the music from above:

If you have a friend, ^ then hold the
Treasure close ^ and without shame
Say and mean you'll stand together, ^
Though you have no thought of gain.

2a
Trumpets ringing, choirs are singing, ^
Hands of friendship hold us fast, ^
Sailing on through thunder, lightning, ^
Peace is in our hearts at last.

Joyful Joyful lift your voices
all creation everywhere.

Hearts and hands cross sea and lands

Every land and every nation.
Strong and mighty; meek and mild.

Help to build a world of peace
for every woman, man and child.

Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter fire imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.

Thy magic reunites those
Whom stern custom has parted;
All men will become brothers
Under thy gentle wing.

May he who has had the fortune
To gain a true friend
And he who has won a noble wife
Join in our jubilation!

Yes, even if he calls but one soul
His own in all the world.
But he who has failed in this
Must steal away alone and in tears.

All the world's creatures
Draw joy from nature's breast;
Both the good and the evil
Follow her rose-strewn path.

She gave us kisses and wine
And a friend loyal unto death;
She gave lust for life to the lowliest,
And the Cherub stands before God.

TENOR SOLO AND CHORUS
Joyously, as his suns speed
Through Heaven's glorious order,
Hasten, Brothers, on your way,
Exulting as a knight in victory.

CHORUS

Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter fire imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.
The Lyrics to Ode to Joy
Name: Helen McKinney2008-04-09
An ode is simply a song which may or may not have lyrics.

Ode To Joy is actually the theme from the 4th Movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony which is written to be performed by a Symphony Orchestra (although Beethoven was inspired to write this by a poem by Frederich Schiller (sp?) which he originally intended to have sung at some point in the symphony. We don't usually hear the 9th Symphony performed this way since the human voice is not traditionally used in a symphonic context!). However, there ARE lyrics which have been added to this melody and used as a hymn in both Catholic and Protestant churches (and in many non-denominational & Pentecostal churches as well!) The lyrics to the hymn are as follows:

"Ode To Joy"

Joyful, joyful,
We adore Thee,
God of glory,
Lord of love.
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee;
Hail Thee to the sun above!
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,
Drive the dark of doubt away.
Giver of immortal gladness
Fill us with the light of day.

Mortals join the mighty chorus,
Which the morning stars began.
Father love is reigning o'er us;
Brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing march we onward,
Victors in the midst of strife.
Joyful music lifts us Son-ward,
In the triumph song of life!

Escucha hermano la canción de la alegría
el canto alegre del que espera un nuevo día.
Listen, my brother, to this very happy song
Sung by those who await for new day to come.

Ven canta, sueña cantando vive soñando el nuevo sol
en que los hombres volverán a ser hermanos.
Come, sing, dream and sing, again about the new sun
when humankind will become a brotherhood.

Si en tu camino solo existe la tristeza
y el llanto amargo de la soledad completa.
If in your journey only exists sorrow and sadness
and the sour crying of complete and utter loneliness.

Si es que no encuentras la alegría en esta tierra
búscala hermano más allá de las estrellas.
If you can't find happiness on this planet
search for it, brother, beyond the twinkling stars.

"The Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Completed in 1824, it includes part of the ode An die Freude ("Ode To Joy") by Friedrich Schiller, with text sung by soloists and a chorus in the last movement. It is the first example of a major composer using the human voice on the same level with instruments in a symphony."

The song was written by Beethoven, and much later, its lyrics were written by a german composer, Schiller. Here they are:
Freude schöner Götterfunken

Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum.
Deine Zauber binden wieder,
Was die Mode streng geteilt,
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.

Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
eines Freundes Freund zu sein
wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja--wer auch nur eine Seele
sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
weinend sich aus diesem Bund!

Freude trinken alle Wesen
an den Brüsten der Natur,
alle Guten, alle Bösen
folgen ihrer Rosenspur.
Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben,
und der Cherub steht vor Gott.

Name: Louisianajon2005-11-15
The Ode to Joy was adopted as Europe's anthem by the Council of Europe in 1972. My understanding is that Friedrich Schiller wrote the words in 1785 and that Beethoven set the words to music in the forth movement of his ninth symphony in 1824.

Beethoven's composition is also the setting for the Christian hymn, Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee (or Hymn to Joy), a poem written in 1908 by Henry van Dyke.

O friends! Not these sounds!
But let us strike up more pleasant sounds and more joyful!
Joy, o wondrous spark divine,
Daughter of Elysium,
Drunk with fire now we enter,
Heavenly one, your holy shrine.
Your magic powers join again
what fashion strictly did divide;
Brotherhood unites all men
Where your gentle wing's spread wide.
The man who's been so fortunate
To become the friend of a friend,
The man who has won a fair woman -
To the rejoicing let him add his voice.
The man who calls but a single soul
Somewhere in the world his own!
And he who never managed this -
Let him steal forth from our throng!
Joy is drunk by every creature
From Nature's fair and charming breast;
Every being, good or evil,
Follows in her rosy steps.
Kisses she gave to us, and vines,
And one good friend, tried in death;
The serpent she endowed with base desire
And the cherub stands before God.
Gladly as His suns do fly
Through the heavens' splendid plan,
Run now, brothers, your own course,
Joyful like a conquering hero
Embrace each other now, you millions!
The kiss is for the whole wide world!
Brothers - over the starry firmament
A beloved Father must surely dwell.
Do you come crashing down, you millions?
Do you sense the Creators presence, world?
Seek Him above the starry firmament,
For above the stars he surely dwells.
Of course Ode to Joy has lyrics
Name: Trisha2005-06-29
Beethoven wrote the piece to set Schiller's poem "Ode to Joy" (or An Die Freude in the original German) to music. The symphony, with choral voices, premiered in Vienna in 1824 with Beethoven in attendance.

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,

Hearts unfold like flow'rs before Thee,
Opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,

VERSE 2:
All Thy works with joy surround Thee
Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays
Stars and angels sing around Thee
Center of unbroken praise
Field and forest, vale and mountain
Flowery meadow, flashing sea
Chanting birds and flowing fountains
Call us to rejoice in Thee

VERSE 3:
Thou art giving and forgiving
Ever blessing, ever blest
Well spring of the joy of living
Ocean depth of happy rest
Thou our Father Christ our brother
All who live in love are Thine
Teach us how to love each other
Lift us to the joy divine

VERSE 4:
Mortals join this happy chorus
Which the morning stars began
Father love is reigning over us
Brother love binds man to man
Ever singing march we onward
Victors in the midst of strife
Joyful music leads us sunward
In the triumph song of life

Friedrich Schiller - Freude Schöner Götterfunken

Freude schöner Götterfunken

O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!
Sondern lasst uns angenehmere anstimmen
und freudenvollere!

Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken.
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Was die Mode streng geteilt;

Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.

Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben,
Und der Cherub steht vor Gott!

Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen
Durch des Himmels prächt'gen Plan,
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen.

Seid umschlungen, Millionen.
Dieser Kuss der ganzen Welt!
Brüder! Über'm Sternenzelt
Muss ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such ihn über'm Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muss er wohnen.
Yes it does....

It does have lyrics in some versions due to the fact that it's the anthem from European Union. When it was written by Beethoven as the Symphony No. 9 it didn't had lyrics, but then they took the Ode to Joy and added the lyrics.
