Con Te Partiro Comments

  • Con te partiro

This song is about finding Christ and been born again.
    My two cents.

  • Spirit telling their loved one they need to move on.

When I heard this song in the English version I instantly picture this is the person who passed telling their loved one (who is still alive) that they have to move on. The light / horizon (meaning the other side) is not as bright as when they are with the loved one, but they know they have to walk to that light alone, because they want you to live.
In some cultures it is believed that when someone passes you have to open up all the window and doors to make sure their soul passes on. The hardest part is having to close those windows and doors, because that means they are really gone. But the person who passed is telling them that they have to close them and say goodbye.

It made me think about how one left a loved one behind to go to the US for economic opportunity for a while until he had earned enough to support a family. He went across seas and faraway but later they would go away together, when he went back to Europe to bring his bride to the new world.

I can see the multiple ways to get meaning out of this, even thinking about Christs resurrection and the eternal life.

  • Double Entandre

I believe this song can take on different meanings based on where you are in your relationship...

I chose this song for my wedding song. At the time I felt this was a romantic song, where a groom and bride were saying goodbye to their old lives, deciding to leave together on a new journey together.

As my marriage has evolved and has started to fail, I feel a much darker interpretation. One of suicide. When the light of your heart no longer loves you, and the “relationship” is dead, the loss of that love/light to another on the street, is too difficult to bear. The person decides to take their own life, deciding to leave with the memory of the love they once had, because the seas are no longer there.

I believe this explains the sadness in the tone, and makes me realize this song is one of loss and grief, not happiness.

I do find it amazing that the same song, can evoke so many different feelings, for people in different situations. Such a brilliant piece of work.

This was sang at my daughters wedding as she was leaving the reception and was explained to us this way
This is a daughter saying goodbye to her parents as she embarked on her new life
And we definitely agreed however sad it was

  • It's About Death

further to what i wrote above...the french version has a completely different meaning from the original italian, and the revised titles to the song (like "time to say goodbye") cannot be reconciled with the original lyrics and the intended meaning of the writers. the lyrics in italian are somewhat opaque but dense enough that they are capable of giving rise to various interpretations, which is a common mark of good poetics. however, not all interpretations are equal. the words need to be closely examined.

the 3 major clues to the song subject being a lover lost to death: the lover at the window, the light the woman encountered on the street, and the seas that no longer exist. i believe this song describes the situation of a man who has lost his woman to accidental death. the light she encountered on the street is the lights of the car that killed her. he shows his heart to everyone at the window, because as he mourns he looks out the window to the street below where she died. lastly, the seas that were to take hm and his lover to other countries no longer exist for him, because she cannot go any more. nonetheless, he says that he will go with her, that he will experience these countries with her, because she will always be with him, figuratively. he is shattered by her death, and pines bitterly for his lost love.

there appears to have been some second guessing about the theme of death originally intended for this song. the french version does away with the idea of loss altogether, while the altered english title "time to say goodbye" and the subsequent revised recording with the female voice also attempts to mask the focus of the original lyrics. perhaps it was thought that, given its popularity, it should have a more popular or positive meaning that could be embraced by its many fans, rather than a deathly one. however, the intention of the original lyrics is difficult to deny...and the fact that the music itself projects a profound sadness is also hard to escape. the beauty here derives from human pathos, and it may prove impossible to reconcile the original lyrics in any other way.

the sadness of the music itself reinforces the sad lyrical theme. the music, the lyrics, and the vocals of bocelli are all quite exceptional in this very beautiful and touching italian love song. i must admit, it brings tears to my eyes, and it is a song that i would like to remember...

  • It's About Death

the song is truly beautiful, largely because the most beautiful songs are also the saddest. if you want to understand the meaning of these lyrics you must pay very close attention to EVERY word. nobody here has attempted to decipher the meaning of "the light you encountered in the street", nor has anyone tried to explain why the ships and the seas "no longer exist". i also find it hard to understand why most people do not recognize the sadness in the music itself, which to me is actually quite obvious.

the woman has died, and this lover pines for her bitterly. i believe the song describes an accidental death, which explains the light that she "encountered on the street"...the lights of the car that killed her. her death also explains why the ships and the seas that would take them to other parts of the world (their plan for travel) no longer exist FOR HIM, because she cannot go anymore. but the lover insists, "i will go with you" in my mind, in my heart, and in my soul, you are my only love, and i will go with you, you are with me, with me, only you, me and you...

it's a sad song of a lover lost, and only on the surface is it a goodbye song. the music, lyrics and vocals are really quite exceptional...but,one thing for sure, a song about death is NOT a good song for a wedding.

  • It means whatever you want it to

The beauty of the song's lyrics is they can be whatever you want them to be. There is no right or wrong interpretation- they are all right! I can see it being a man yearning for a love lost or mourning a soulmate's death and dreaming of going on ships and seas that no longer exist except in his mind. It gives him comfort to dream of such things that never were.
I can also see if someone wants to believe it is about a new love realized and the wondrous places they may go together.
I just wonder why the last two refrains repeat the phrases of 'ships and seas he knows no, no longer exist.' I think
it is more of a man mourning a loss but again I say it is whatever you want it to mean is the correct answer. To quote another oft-fused idiom, "Whatever floats your boat".

    Til Man 2017-07-31

  • Con Te Partiro

It is a song where a partner loses their soulmate to death - they're unable to do the things they planned to do together; however, while he says goodbye to her, he's also saying he will be with her again, and will do those things with her in Heaven...

  • Still confused!

Why all the guessing? Has anyone thought of asking the songwriter himself, Mr Lucio Quarantotto?

    Robert 2015-06-04

  • Meaning

Somebody just lost their soul mate "i know there is no light,in a room where the sun is absent"and not being able to live without her/him (dies of a broken heart) is going to sail on seas that no longer exist to countries they never saw. "With you I shall experience them again" across the seas of time. One can't live without the other, their souls will be reunited

    Noodles 2012-06-27

  • Con Te Partiro

It's time to say good-bye to a deceased loved one. You will go on to places you never went with him, but you carry him with you in your soul.

  • good for a wedding

This song is good for a wedding, yes its about saying goodbye, about saying goodbye to your old life and hello to your new life.
thats how i see it anyway

    sam 2009-01-22

  • Love it

I plan on using this for my bridal entry. I know that it is about saying goodbye, but in my opinion it is saying goodbye and closing a chapter of your life, a chapter of being single and what not. Because to me, marriage is the beginning of a new chapter!

  • No No No

  • con ti partiro

in spanish its por ti volare which means for you i will fly and just to end this, its a WEDDING SONG! for couples and parents or who ever you want to dance with.

    duke 2008-07-08

  • Actual meaning

Con Te Partiro actually means in Italian "with you I will leave" or "I Will Go with You" which is why it is quite beautiful for a wedding. It was only redone by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli and given new lyrics as Time to Say Goodbye.

    Bubby 2008-06-13

  • actually yes it is appropriate

if you read the italian translation she is talking about saying goodbye but now its time to follow him

    Jenny 2008-06-12

  • love the music.

It actually means with you I will leave. I love the music and am looking for it without the vocals.

    soontobewed 2008-06-09

  • My Wedding Song

With the only english lyrics being Time to say goodbye, I can see how people would view it as a sad song, but if you translate the next line, To counties I never (knew), It's more of a goodbye to the past, not the subject. It's letting go of the past and everything they never got to do and moving on to the future to their lives together. I plan on sing this piece as I walk down the aisle with my father.

    Chelsey 2008-05-30

  • Bocelli interview

I heard in an interview this song is about finding your true love. That once you find that person, you are at peace to 'say goodbye' to life experiences and things you haven't seen with this person...because you are so satisfied with them. You are saying goodbye to the world you experienced before them.

    kalebmax33 2008-03-14

  • Great song, but not suitable for wedding

This is actually a great song, but it isn't suitable for wedding coz it's about saying goodbye

    Ashley Ku 2007-01-30

  • Funeral sing

this is more appropriate at a funeral not a wedding... time to say good bye!!!!!

    kate 2007-01-07

  • It is NOT goodbye

Ok... seriously, read the words in translation.. they make hardly any sense if you say "time to say goodbye."
It is NOT time to say goodbye. I don't know WHY there was a version done saying otherwise, but I ASSURE you... it means "I will go with you" and NOT "Time to say goodbye."
"With you I go" is basically what it means. So, YES, it is a wedding song. OK???

    Cassie 2006-11-06

  • Translation

Great translation Tina, but I'd make a few minor changes:

    When I'm alone
    I dream on the horizon
    And words fail me,
Yes, I know there is no light
In a room where the sun is absent
If you are not with me
    On the windows
    I'll show everone my heart
    Which you set alight
    Enclose within me
    The light you
    Encountered on the street

    I'll go with you
    To countries I newer
    Saw and shared with you
Now, yes, I shall experience them
    I'll go with you
    On ships, across seas
    Which, I know,
    Do not exist anymore
With you I shall experience them

    When you are far away
    I dream on the horizon
    And words fail
    And yes, I know
That you are with me, with me,
You, my moon, are here with me
My sun, you are here with me

    I'll go with you
    To countries I never
    Saw and shared with you
Now, yes, I shall experience them
    I'll go with you
    On ships across seas
    Which, I know,
    Do not exist anymore
With you I shall experience them again
    I'll go with you
    On ships across seas
    Which, I know,
    Do not exist anymore
With you I shall experience them again
    I'll go with you
    I with you

  • Goodbye still makes sense

Agreeing with the comments made to this point about whether it should be "I'll leave with you" and why is the Bocelli/Brightman version sung with the words "Time to say goodbye"--well, it still makes sense. The person is indeed saying goodbye to the past and looking forward into the future with his/her partner.

    Brad 2006-08-03

  • Title

I know that "Con Te Partirò" means "I go with you." However, I think the English works too. See, when I hear "Time to Say Goodbye," I think that the singer(s) are saying "It's time to say goodbye, because you and I are going together." Kind of like they're saying goodbye to their old life so they can start a new one together. That's what I think of when I hear time to say goodbye. So, it works for a wedding. People think it's sad when they don't understand the entire context of the song, and I think that the english phrase "Time to Say Goodbye" needs to be put in context for it to be properly understood.

That is correct... Con Te Partiro means "I'll Go With You"...maybe you heard the other version which he usually sings whenever he ends his concerts or records. He puts a twist to that version by singing the line "Time to Say Goodbye" instead of "Con Te Partiro".

  • there is a straight translation

Con te partiro means "i'll go with you" con te means with "with you" and Partire means "to leave" so when it's conjugated to partiro it literally means "with you i'll leave" a.k.a. "I'll go with you"
the lyrics can be found at www.abmusica.com
you can check the translation at www.freetranslation.com
and just to be safe I called my cugina (cousin) in Italy to verify
It's "I'll go with you" and it's not a sad song, it's a love song about 2 people's journey through life together

  • Which is it

So, which is it? Any Italian speakers care to enlighten us? Is it "if you leave me" or "i'll go with you"?

  • Can be a beautiful wedding song

The first time I ever heard this song I was in techno club! I thought it was so beautiful if only i could find the orig. arrangement. When I finally heard the full song I knew this was what I was walking down the isle to! People can take the message a million different ways, I choose to look at it as if to say, I am leaving my parents to go with my husband, and together we will walk the road of life until we reach the gate to eternal paradise. That we will trust and serve the Lord together and never leave the path that he has choosen for us. Plus, if you use it without the words nobody will know the diffrence until they do their research!

    Gretta 2006-03-01

  • a simple google search gives the answer

"Time to say Goodbye" was written specifically to commemorate the last fight of a German boxer. The lyrics were changed for this purpose and are not a literal translation of "Con Te Partirò" which is a song of unity and appropriate for a wedding (as many people have stated).

  • Beautiful Song

I agree in the fact that the song is meant to be about going together with the one you love. It's not about leaving someone...the two are embarking on a journey together. I think that they shouldn't have changed the name to "Time to Say Goodbye". This is one of my favorite songs, and I would love to play it at my wedding.

Vita, I think that it is a wonderful song to dance with your dad at your wedding.

  • Misinterpretation

As with any piece of translation, words are not always 100% accurately translated. In English the song is called "Time to Say Goodbye" but in Italian it is quite the opposite. I would like to retranslate this song accurately. What the song is actually saying, is that the couple is embarking on a life-long journey together towards "forever". I am listening to this song at this very instant and I will listen to it again and again and also on my wedding day next year.

  • Con Te Partiro

I'm a poetess and this song caught me off guard when I was with my boyfriend in Venice. Since then I was playing this in piano. This song means, "with you, I shall go" for me the message of this song is as both couples embark on the sea of challenges in life together, he or she would prefer that they would go together.. united.. that with him or her he or she is willing to go, live and face those tomorrows. So it's not really a good bye song but whoever translated it to Time To Say Goodbye (so literal translation) is far off from the real deep message of the song. If I were to marry, I'd choose this as my wedding song as I shall play it myself in piano!
